Tammy: I have finally found time to start updating the site again. Thanks to everyone for their feedback. Keep it coming! I updated the Mozilla guide for the lastest 0.9.6 version and the Netscape guide for the lastest 4.79 version.

Tammy: We moved to a new Web host that offers us more flexibility including a search engine. Look for the search engine soon. I will also be updating the site for all the changes to Red Hat Linux 7.1, SuSE Linux 7.1, the 2.4 kernel, and more. Stay tuned…

I updated GAIM: AIM Client for Linux again to include instructions for installing the new release. It is great! Check it out.
Friday September 1, 2000
Tammy: I updated GAIM: AIM Client for Linux to include instructions on how to install the very latest source code from the CVS server. The CVS version has many new features such as full smiley face support and much better graphics overall. I have also included how to compile GAIM as a Gnome Applet. Enjoy!
Sunday August 27, 2000
Tammy: I updated Using Your Scroll Mouse in Linux (imwheel) to include instructions on how to configure imwheel to automatically start when X is started.
Saturday August 26, 2000
Tammy: I updated the Netscape Installation Guide for the lastest version of Netscape for kernel 2.0.x which is 4.74. I added a tutorial for Netscape 4.75 Installation for kernel 2.2.x or higher. I also added a section on how to install/upgrade from the RPM provided by Red Hat. I updated Network Configuration Using the Command Line to include how to edit the configuration files, configure for DHCP, and a few other bits of extra information.
Friday August 25, 2000
Tammy: Someone made a good suggestion to have the URL of Where to Download links visible for those of you who like to print out the guides. So, I changed all the guides in the applications section to be this way. I will eventually get around to all of the guides. I updated the RealPlayer Installation Guide for the newest version. RealPlayer 7 for Linux has finally been released as stable.

Well, after deciding that the Linux.com people were never going to respond, they put our link up on the community links page. So, the link is back on the header.

We joined the Red Hat Affiliate program, so today we put up the banners for it. Here’s the deal: We’re paying for server space every month to keep this site up and going. As a part of the Red Hat Affiliate program, we get $.02 for every click through to Red Hat’s site. Any money that we make will go directly to pay for our connection at Piva. We don’t want the site to look too commercial, so we’ve only put the banners on three pages. Also, the page on the other end of the link isn’t trying to sell you anything…it’s just a site with info on how to download Red Hat Linux and RPMs and it also has info on Red Hat fixes and advisories. If it bothers enough people, we will rethink this decision. Let us know what you think.

Brent: Work (real world job, that is) has been busy lately, so the updates haven’t been as frequent as I’d like, but that’s life. The only update made today was to remove the “Linux.com partner” link from the header to the site. If you look around on the Linux.com site, they claim that as long as you put a prominent link to Linux.com somewhere on your site, they’ll add you to their list of Linux community links. I have spent two months trying to get added to the list, but they won’t even answer my emails. So, the link is history. Sorry.

Tammy: Wrote a few tutorials on Configuring A Local Printer using Red Hat’s PrintTool, Configuring A Remote Printer using Red Hat’s PrintTool, and Linux Print Sharing. Also updated GAIM Installation guide for version 0.9.20-1.
Brent: Finished with the kernel configuration and compilation guides. They are published now. Also published an installation guide for Mozilla. Today was one of those days that I’ve been waiting for for a long time. Tammy and I had plenty of time to work on the site and we got a lot of material cranked out. Here’s a quick list of what’s new from me:
Finding and Installing Kernel Source Code
Configuring a New Kernel
Compiling a New Kernel
Mozilla Milestone 16
Oh, by the way, Napster didn’t get shut down yesterday after all. Woohoo!
Friday July 28, 2000
Tammy: Well, I finally have time to post and work on the site again. I did a lot of maintenance work on the site today – updating, fixing code, etc.
Brent: Worked some more on the kernel guide. Don’t know why the kernel stuff takes so long. I’m verifying every step to make sure I don’t leave anything out.
Thursday July 27, 2000
Brent: Worked on finishing the kernel compilation guide. There’s a few parts to it, and all but one are finsihed, but I don’t think it makes sense to publish part of it. After all, you don’t want to get 3/4 of the way through the process and then all of a sudden the documentation stops, right? I will be glad to finally finish that. Look for it tomorrow (or soon thereafter).
On another note, all this litigation stuff is out of hand. So, Napster gets shut down tomorrow, and that puts an end to music swapping, right? To quote somebody’s talkback on Slashdot, “Cat…out of bag…not going back in.” Here’s hoping the MPAA loses in their crazy lawsuit over DeCSS and 2600.
Friday July 22, 2000
Brent: Published a guide to GtkEntry. TriLUG is having an installfest tomorrow at UNC. We are back from being out of town for a while, so updates should get more frequent.
Sunday July 2, 2000
Brent: Published a guide to GtkScrollbars. I’m working on five or six other guides that aren’t quite ready to be published yet. There’s not enough hours in the day. Have a happy 4th of July.
Thursday June 29, 2000
Brent: Worked on three new GTK+ guides…they should be published in the next day or so. Spending lots of time planning a wedding, so expect the updates to be a little sparse for a couple of weeks. I love working on the site and all, but some things are more important.
Also, we’ve been getting some feedback and virtually all of it has been positive. We love to hear that kind of stuff…it makes all the hours we spend on the site worthwhile. I’m glad to know that our information has been helping people out there.
Sunday June 25, 2000
Ok, folks, sorry about being AWOL for a week or so. Our machines finally came in and we’ve been out of town for a few day. Oh yeah, and we played a few days worth of Quake III Arena. Now I see what all the fuss is about. We should be putting some new stuff out in the next few days.
By the way, our new machines rock. The Abit KA7 board is pretty nice, but there are some BIOS gotchas. First of all, you have to flash the BIOS to allow the PS/2 mouse to work in X Windows. That was a pain. Maybe I’m a wuss, but flashing the BIOS has always made me kind of nervous, especially on a brand new board. Also, you have to enable the “Memory Hole 15-16M” option in the BIOS to allow the SoundBlaster PCI 128 to work. Otherwise, it freezes the machine in both Windows and Linux. But it’s great now.
Thursday June 15, 2000
Brent: Still waiting by the door.
Tammy: Published updated GAIM Installation guide for version 0.9.19-1 with limited support for the
and
smiley faces.
Wednesday June 14, 2000
Brent: Published two new GTK+ guides: GtkFileSelection and GtkDialog. Another day and still no motherboard, processor, or memory. By the time we get them, the prices will have dropped and we could have gotten the 900MHz Athlon for the same price. Great.
Tammy: Published Configuring your sound card with sndconfig.
Tuesday June 13, 2000
Brent: Worked on some Perl scripts for the site. Everything except the motherboards, CPUs, and memory have arrived for our new computers. How frustating!
Tammy: Published Samba guide and added some things to the front page. Finally wrote the TAR guide. Answered some emails about the website.
Sunday June 11, 2000
Brent: Worked on new GTK+ guides about GtkDialog, GtkFileDialog. Published one on GtkArrow. Will publish the others tomorrow. We ordered some parts to build a couple of Athlon 850s about a week ago. Where is our stuff? Dang ground shipping. I’m too cheap for the overnight. Our 200MHz Pentium Pros have seen better days.
Tammy: Published a GTK+ guide on GtkColorSelection. Fixed a whole bunch of html issues (It was Brent’s fault). Also, we got a banner added to linux.com’s community banner ad system, thanks to Garrett from linux.com. Have a look at linux.com
Saturday June 10, 2000
Brent: Published new guides on GTK+ about GtkHandleBox, GtkCalendar, and GtkCheckButton.
Tammy: Worked on GTK+ guide on GtkComboBox.
Friday June 9, 2000
Brent: Published some new GTK+ guides on GtkToggleButton and GtkMenu.
Thursday June 8, 2000
Nothing too new to report. We went to the TriLUG meeting tonight. Looking forward to an installfest at University of North Carolina in July. By the way, if anybody out there wants to donate a site license of Partition Magic to TriLUG, send me an email.
Wednesday June 7, 2000
Brent: Created a GTK+ guide for GtkRadioButton. Worked on a few more guides but they are not quite ready yet. Looking forward to the TriLUG meeting tomorrow.
Tammy: Created a tutorial for modem configuration using netcfg on Red Hat. We’re tenatively scheduled to speak at the August TriLUG meeting here in Raleigh, NC. Got started on Konqueror documentation.
Tuesday June 6, 2000
Brent: Worked more on the GTK+ Guide and finally moved it to the site! Right now, there’s about ten programming guides up on the site. More to follow. Please have a look and tell us what you think. WE NEED FEEDBACK!!
Tammy: Created a few pages for the site that are still under wraps…look for more tomorrow. Corresponded with the KDE people we will be working with for the Konqueror documentation.
Monday June 5, 2000
We had lunch with a couple of the guys from OpenNMS.org. They are working on an open source network monitoring package. We also talked to Mike McBride at KDE and we’ll be contributing some documentation for Konqueror for KDE2.
Sunday June 4, 2000
Tammy: Added guide for Adobe Acrobat Reader. Updated Netscape guide to Netscape 4.7.3. Updated the GAIM guide for the new version to work around AOL’s latest round of AOL lockouts for non-AOL IM clients. These lockouts seem so silly. It’s only a matter of hours before the other IM clients have a workaround, so what does AOL gain? Check out freeim.org for more info. Also submitted some guides to linux.com, which can be found in the How-to section. In particular, if you look in the Ethernet, Networking, and PPP sections, you’ll see some of our guides.
Brent: Worked on a GTK+ tutorial. Should be ready to launch RSN (real soon now).
Saturday June 3, 2000
We have finally moved out of the bandwidth dark ages and got a cable modem. In general, we’d prefer DSL, but the local telco is so slow to deploy DSL repeaters that we’ve had to consider other options. We immediately downloaded Helix GNOME and were very impressed. We also installed the beta of KDE 2 and liked what we saw. In particular, Konqueror is a big advancement for KDE.
