Introduction
PrintTool is a Red Hat utility to configure a printer in Linux. This utility is a graphical interface that modifies the /etc/printcap configuration file. The daemon lpd controls print access in Linux. You must be root to add a printer and restart the daemon. After modifying the /etc/printcap configuration file either through printtool or by hand, you must restart the lpd daemon for the changes to take effect. If you are using Red Hat Linux 7.1 or higher, PrintTool is replaced with Printconf, and these instructions do not apply.

Configuring Printtool for a Local Printer

  1. As root, start PrintTool as root with the command printtool.

  2. To add a local printer, Click the Add button and choose Local Printer from the menu and Click OK.
  3. This will usually auto-detect your printer as /dev/lp0.

  4. Click OK to bring up the following dialog box.

  5. The default settings for the first four items will usually work here. Click the Select button and choose your printer, resolution, paper size, and other print options in the dialog box that appears.
  6. Click OK and OK again in the other dialog box.
  7. You should now see your printer listed in the printtool window.
  8. Restart the lpd daemon by choosing lpd-->Restart lpd from the pulldown menu.
  9. To test your printer, choose Tests-->Print ASCII test page from the pulldown menu.
